Les chiens peuvent-ils avoir un TOC ? Pas vraiment, mais ils ont des comportements compulsifs. Quelle est la différence? Que sont les troubles compulsifs ?
Les troubles compulsifs (trouble obsessionnel compulsif, TOC) surviennent chez le chien, mais pas très fréquemment. Ces comportements sont des exagérations des comportements normaux des chiens. Ils sont exposés plus longtemps que prévu, sont répétés hors contexte et dans des situations où ils seraient considérés comme anormaux.
Les comportements courants des chiens qui peuvent être classés comme compulsifs comprennent la rotation, la poursuite de la queue, les morsures de mouches, la poursuite légère, les aboiements, la mastication, le regard dans l'espace, la succion d'un jouet ou la succion d'une partie du corps.
Quelles sont les causes des troubles compulsifs chez les chiens?
Les troubles compulsifs sont causés par les conflits, le stress et/ou la frustration. À chaque événement stressant que votre chien rencontre, il y a une libération de neurotransmetteurs impliqués dans la réponse au stress. Lorsqu'un chien est frustré ou stressé, il peut commencer à adopter un comportement normal comme tenir un jouet dans sa bouche afin de soulager ce stress. Si le fait de tenir le jouet dans sa bouche réduit réellement les neurotransmetteurs impliqués dans l'événement stressant, le chien est susceptible de reproduire ce comportement lorsqu'il est stressé. Pour certains chiens, ce comportement devient ritualisé et répétitif en raison de la récompense intense qui y est associée - réduction du sentiment physiologique de stress ou de frustration.
Au fil du temps, les comportements compulsifs progressent et s'aggravent. Les chiens commencent souvent à adopter le comportement compulsif avec n'importe quel événement stressant, pas seulement la situation d'incitation d'origine. Le comportement peut prendre le dessus sur la vie du chien en remplaçant les habitudes normales de sommeil et d'alimentation. Cela peut causer des blessures au chien car l'impulsion à adopter le comportement particulier devient de plus en plus forte. Les chiens qui poursuivent leur queue finissent souvent par mutiler la queue nécessitant une amputation, tandis que les chiens qui se sucent provoquent fréquemment des infections cutanées.
Parfois, ce qui semble être un comportement compulsif est en fait un comportement de recherche d'attention. Même les comportements qui commencent comme des comportements liés à la frustration peuvent être récompensés par inadvertance lorsque les propriétaires prêtent attention au chien lorsqu'il exécute le comportement. Par exemple, si un propriétaire crie Non !, cela est toujours considéré par le chien comme une attention et peut perpétuer le comportement.
Si vous pensez que votre chien présente un comportement qui attire votre attention, essayez les tests suivants. Tout d'abord, filmez votre chien lorsque vous n'êtes pas à la maison pour voir si et quand le comportement se produit en votre absence. Ensuite, essayez de sortir de la pièce la prochaine fois que votre chien exécute le comportement. S'il n'exécute pas le comportement en votre absence, votre attention ou votre présence fait très probablement partie du problème.
Certaines races de chiens sont prédisposées héréditairement à certains comportements compulsifs. Par exemple, les Bull Terriers et les bergers allemands sont couramment observés pour chasser la queue. Les Labrador Retrievers présentent des comportements oraux compulsifs tels que le pica, dans lesquels le chien est poussé à ramasser n'importe quel objet et à le manger. Les Doberman Pinschers sont bien connus pour la succion des flancs, par laquelle le chien tient et suce la peau du flanc pendant de longues périodes. La meilleure façon de savoir si votre chien est prédisposé à un certain type de comportement est de parler à votre vétérinaire de la prédisposition génétique de votre race. Ensuite, si possible, parlez au propriétaire des parents de votre chien pour connaître leur comportement.
Comment traiter les troubles compulsifs chez le chien ?
La première chose à faire si vous pensez que votre chien a un trouble compulsif est de demander de l'aide à votre vétérinaire. Parce que les conditions médicales peuvent provoquer des signes similaires à des comportements compulsifs chez les chiens, il est extrêmement important d'exclure les maladies médicales telles que les troubles neurologiques, endocriniens, gastro-intestinaux et orthopédiques. Votre chien doit subir un examen physique approfondi ainsi qu'un dépistage en laboratoire avant d'envisager un traitement pour un trouble compulsif.
Si votre chien est en parfaite santé et ne souffre pas, il peut avoir un trouble compulsif. Les troubles compulsifs sont traités avec des médicaments pour réduire l'excitation et les conflits ainsi qu'une modification du comportement pour donner au chien une stratégie d'adaptation alternative en dehors du comportement compulsif. Le traitement est souvent prolongé et se poursuit pendant toute la vie du chien. Si votre chien est diagnostiqué avec un trouble compulsif, vous pouvez vous attendre à des hauts et des bas dans le traitement et dans le comportement de votre chien. Souvent, les cas chroniques sont référés à un comportementaliste vétérinaire certifié pour traitement.
La meilleure chose que vous puissiez faire pour votre chien si vous soupçonnez un trouble compulsif ou si votre chien affiche à plusieurs reprises un comportement, même s'il semble inoffensif maintenant, est de demander l'aide de votre vétérinaire. Lorsque les comportements compulsifs sont traités tôt et rapidement, le pronostic est bien meilleur que s'ils ont évolué vers un état chronique.
